What Is a Vibratory Plate Compactor Used for?

Vibratory plate compactors, like the Atlas-Copco LH800 or the Wacker Neuson BPS2050B, consist of a large cast iron or steel base plate, on top of which sits the engine that powers the machine.

The operator of a vibratory plate compactor stands behind the machine, holding onto the handlebars for control and stability.

Once it is running, the operator uses a handlebar to control the speed and direction of the machine. As the vibro-plate moves around, the base vibrates up and down rapidly, exerting immense force onto the material beneath it, compacting it to the desired levels.

Vibratory plates are used for:

• Compacting soil and aggregates for foundations - Before a structure is built, the underlying soil needs to be compacted to a certain standard. A vibratory plate compactor can be used to do this.
• Preparing the ground for paving driveways, sidewalks, and walkways - Similarly, to ensure that driveways, sidewalks, and walkways last for as long as possible, a vibro-plate, such as the Weber CR8CCD2 or the Bomag BPR70, can be used to tamp the ground before concrete of asphalt is applied.
• Repairing potholes and asphalt patches - Plate compactors and rammers can also be used to ensure asphalt patches on roads and driveways are fully packed into the existing void to ensure they will stand the test of time.
